Tuesday Tip of the Week: Side Hustle

Happy Monday friends….I mean Tuesday. Hope you had a great long weekend and enjoyed some time with family and friends. Victoria Day is the kick off to summer here in Canada and summer always makes me think of my days as a teen. Those were the good old days when life was carefree and fun. It all ended around the age of 15 when I went to work every summer. Having that job helped me have all the cool things in high school. Even as an adult I think picking up some side work is important. I have had several times in my life where having a “side hustle” saved my ass. At one time I was working 3 jobs adding up to about 70 hours a week. I was able to narrow that down to one job eventually, the one that paid the most of course.

In this day in age of downsizing, shitty bosses, bad pay for hard work, no overtime and everything else meant to keep the “poor” even more poor it is essential to have multiple streams of income. Like I mentioned before, having that side hustle saved my butt a few times. One time, my main job burnt down. No lies, the place actually had a fire and was out of commission for 3 months. Luckily I had 2 other jobs at the time and picked up more hours at one of them. I ended up not going back to the main job because the money was better at my side hustle.

It came at a good time because I could not afford to not be working at that time. I know many people struggling to make ends meat. They have a hard time keeping a roof over their head let alone paying off debt or getting ahead in life. I know for a fact picking up some part time work would enrich them in several ways. Dedicating that extra money to debt payments is huge. Using it to start and an emergency fund is even better. My main reason for a side hustle is a little different, a little more jaded.

A side hustle to me is financial empowerment. No one employer holds the key to my financial freedom. No one person can hold me back. I find that employers can use a job as a stick to beat you with. The “If you don’t like, then don’t work here,” mentality honestly makes me sick and is the sign of a shitty boss. Having that side hustle that can at any time be the main hustle enables you to choose your destiny. YOU choose who you want to work for. YOU choose whether or not you want to put up with a jerk boss’ bullshit. You have the power to choose how you spend your time and no one employer holds you back. Think of a side hustle as diversifying your employment portfolio. No one source holds all the pieces of your financial freedom.

Having an ear to the ground at several places never hurts either. Most places promote from within. You will be on the ground level of several places and hear of all the opportunities. I remember when I lost my main job, having that part-time work was all I had. I used it to keep afloat until I found some full-time work again. We all want to be rich right? No one has ever gotten rich working nine to five!

Have a great day friends, and have an amazing short week. See you tomorrow with “WTF Wednesday,” my weekly rant on things that waste your money.

“Opportunities are usually disguised as hard work, so most people don’t recognize them.” – Ann Landers
