Friday Final Reflection: Empathy
Welcome back to my final reflection of the week friends. I hope you enjoyed the beautiful weather this week. My final thought this week is about empathy. I think that having empathy is what separates us from the animals. It is what also separates good people from the assholes. I have found a complete and utter lack of empathy existing in our society today. To me, to be truly empathetic is one of the best qualities someone can have.
We are all different in literally every way possible. Even people who have had very similar experiences react to them differently. Some people are “tougher” and roll with the punches, some don’t handle adversity well. I commonly hear that “Well I deal with that every day, why can’t this person?” I’ve been guilty of it too. It is not fair to equate how you deal, to how someone else deals. This is where being empathetic comes into play.
Being empathetic to me doesn’t mean that you have to go to bat for someone. In my mind, you also don’t have to sacrifice yourself for anyone else either. What you do have to do is be able to recognize that no one knows someone’s situation except that person. Because of that, we shouldn’t have a negative opinion on someone else. That is unless they negatively impact you with their actions.
We all have to remember we are all in this together. Everyone you work with is on your “team.” Everyone in your neighborhood is as well. I mentioned this in my Boss Blog post this past Wednesday, there truly is no “us” and “them.” The only “them” is those in power. “Us” is everyone else. We need to work together to get the things we need and want and in order to do that empathy is key. The world doesn’t need more jackasses, we have enough. Have a great long weekend friends. Be safe and have fun!
