10 High-Paying, In-Demand Careers for 2018

Finding the right career isn’t easy. These days you need the right training, but also the right experience. Having a top-notch degree might not be enough anymore. In this economy, there are still many high paying careers that will help you achieve financial freedom. The question is: Are there any openings in these positions? You definitely don’t want to be in a group of 1000 people vying for one spot. In this post, I will describe 10 high-paying, in-demand careers in Canada. If you are looking for a new gig this year, it will be worth a read to see what’s out there.

Welder

While you might not be able to use a keyboard, welding might be right up your alley. Welding is one of the most in-demand jobs in the manufacturing sector. Pipe welders command a high salary right off the hop. Even more in demand are underwater welders which are very scarce. It is not uncommon for welding jobs to pay over six figures which is very sweet gig indeed.

Pharmacist

The healthcare field, in general, is booming, but the pharmacy sector is absolutely exploding. There are several reasons why this is happening. Firstly, an aging population requires more medicine for daily life. Also, as medical science becomes more and more advanced, more and more illness can be treated via pharmaceuticals. Finally, retailers have seen the potential boom from offering drugs and have jumped on the bandwagon. Therefore, you see grocery stores and pharmacies combined all over the place. This has left a shortage of Pharmacists and their assistants. While you do need a degree to obtain this job, you will more than likely have a job waiting for you, especially if you are willing to relocate.

Psychologist

Let’s face it, we all probably need to see a psychologist. The growing awareness surrounding mental health has made the field highly in demand. There are many opportunities in the public sector, working at clinics and hospitals. Even more ambitious is private sector psychology where you can take on as many clients as you want. As time goes on this field will only become more in demand as mental health becomes less stigmatized. By the way, psychologists make great pay and have a large amount of time off too.

Nurse

Registered nurses are quickly becoming one of the most in-demand jobs in Canada. As the population ages, so to do the nurses that are already in the field. This means that many positions will need to be filled over the coming years. Also, in many parts of Canada, nurses might be the only caregivers available. If you are willing to relocate a nice paycheque could be waiting for you. Schooling will be necessary, but the timeline is nowhere near that of a doctor.

Truck Driver

Driving a truck can pay surprisingly well. That is especially true if you are willing to travel distances or drive a truck up north. Statistics show that about half of all truck drivers are approaching retirement age which leaves thousands of empty spots to be filled. Sadly, a side effect of this job is sleep-deprivation, but if you don’t mind long hours it could be the career for you.

Software Engineer

It used to be that software engineers only applied for jobs in the tech industry. That is not the case anymore as this field has expanded to healthcare, banking, and even government positions. You will be able to find high paying jobs just about anywhere, but you will be alone much of the time. If you are somewhat anti-social, it might be the job for you.

Administrative Assistant

Back in the day, administrative assistants were looked at as coffee gophers who answered phones. Not anymore. This position is highly in-demand and quite extensive. Assistants are now the literal backbones of companies, doing everything from project planning, human resources, accounting and even technology. Because of this huge workload, the pay for these hard workers has gone up substantially. For those with great organizational and interpersonal skills, this job might be for you.

Accountant

I personally could never be an accountant, but if you love numbers, there could be a huge payday at the end of it for you. You can find work in any sector, be it private or public. Due to the value of these workers, their pay can be very large, well into the six-figure range. If you qualify as a CPA, that pay can be even higher. In my experience, they are worth every penny and could save you 10x what you pay them.

Sales Representative

If you are good with people, you will always have work. That is especially true for sale representatives, which is the second most in-demand job in Canada only behind general laborers. There is one catch for many sales jobs, they are mostly commission based. For some, this is no good, as a regular paycheque is all that matters to them. If you can stomach the tougher times, a huge salary might be waiting for you as many sales jobs pay well over 100K. the best part of sales jobs, you earn more money the more you sell. For ambitious individuals, it could be the dream job they are waiting for.

Business Management Consultant

While productivity might be at an all-time high, companies are always looking for new ways to run more efficiently. This is where consultants are brought in to help them do just that. This highly in-demand field also pays very well. Specializing in fields like technology, hospitality or finance will be the most likely road. This means you will need a degree and some on the job experience.

As the economy moves deeper into information-based systems it is important that we adapt along with it. While certain jobs may be disappearing, other ones are popping up and are highly in-demand. Often these jobs pay far more but expect more out of you. If you are willing to put forth the effort, large pay might be waiting for you on the other end.  In my opinion, Canada is on the verge of an economic renaissance, with exciting new jobs taking over the traditional landscape.
