15 Side-Hustles that Can Build Your Bankroll

We live in a tough economy. Wages are not keeping up with inflation. Every day it seems that life keeps getting more and more expensive. It is not uncommon to need 2 or even 3 jobs just to get by, let alone ahead. I am a big proponent of the “Side Hustle.” I believe in diversifying your income as well as your investments. It keeps you active and makes sure you aren’t beholden to one employer. For some of my clients, the numbers just don’t add up and they need extra income. For them, a side-hustle is necessary to achieve what they want in life. Today, I give you 15 Side Hustles you can use to build savings, get out of debt, or even just enjoy life more. More money can mean a better life for you and the ones you love.

1) Ride Sharing

Now I would never want to be a cab driver, but you can make some extra coin doing it. Apps like Uber and Lyft have made anyone with a suitable vehicle a potential cabbie and the side hustle potential is tremendous. One thing to watch out for is the potential wear and tear on your vehicle from the extra use and always be mindful of the cost of gasoline. A fuel-efficient vehicle would be essential. There is no reason why even a few nights a week couldn’t generate you an extra $500-800 a month.

2) House Sitting

There is some good money to made watching people’s houses when they go on vacation. This side hustle can be especially easy if you yourself work at home. If all you need is an internet connection, spending a bit of your day watching someone else’s property is easy money. This is especially true for snowbirds who may be gone a few months of the year. They will need someone to keep their plants alive and make sure they aren’t being robbed. While you won’t break the bank with this gig, it will be some of the easiest money you can make.

3) Pet Sitting

Even more important than house sitting is pet sitting. Those lovable furballs can’t be left alone all day, so vacationers need someone to come feed and walk them. If you have a love for animals, this is a no-brainer. It is not uncommon to earn a few hundred a week for just a few hours of your time. Always make sure you scoop the poop, however. You don’t want the neighbors to not like you.

4) Barista

Now this one might seem odd but pumping out lattes is a great way to make extra money. The reason why this made the list is simple. Coffee is not getting any less popular and coffee houses are always hiring. Baristas also can make decent money for the work they have to do. Some places like Starbucks even offer benefits to their workers, which can be a great way to supplement your full-time work. They can also make tips which are great to throw a little pocket change into the mix. Overall a good gig in my opinion.

5) Yard Work

Again, not something I would want to do, but a great way to make some extra income. If you have a green thumb and don’t mind getting your hands dirty, then this is a great way to make money. Given our terrible winters here in Canada, you are almost guaranteed year-round work whether it is mowing lawns, raking leaves, or shoveling snow.

6) Organizer

If you have a knack for decluttering, people will actually pay you to make their space more livable. Some people, myself included, have no talent when it comes to staying organized. Rooms become a tornado of papers, clothes, and furniture. Use those amateur interior design skills to get people happy in their homes and you never know what can happen. It may become a legit full on career.

7) Rent out your Space

If you have unused space where you live including rooms, parking spaces or even a closet, you can rent that out to people who desperately need it. Parking spaces in urban areas especially can fetch good dollars. An extra room can be used by travelers needing a place to stay for a night or more. Some people have even been known to make their whole mortgage payment by utilizing extra space for cash. Kind of cool eh?

8) Personal Training

You will need certain accreditations to take part in this side hustle, but helping people get fit is a great way to make extra moola. You must be into personal development and have a gift to motivate others. If so people will pay you a good hourly rate to help them achieve their fitness goals. Besides money, you will also feel great watching your clients get in better shape.

10) Translator

If you know another language you can definitely make some extra money translating. There are thousands of new Canadians who need this type of service. Being their go-to during their first months in the country is extremely valuable and a great way to make extra money. You could even be brought on by companies needed a valuable resource during business negotiations. The possibilities are truly endless when you have this valuable skill.

11) Music Instructor

Learning a musical instrument can be challenging and very expensive. Helping young people learn this skill can be very lucrative for you if you have the skills. Formal music lessons cost a fortune and you can get into the mix by charging less than the schools. This side hustle can be done at any age, even well into retirement. It is a great way to take your love of music to the next level.

12) Tutor

Our school system often doesn’t give children the personal attention they need to thrive. Being a one on one tutor can be a great way to help kids excel in school and earn some good money while you do it. This is a great way to make extra cash while keeping your full-time job intact. It is especially useful if you combine your educational skills with a 2nd language, as newcomers to our country are always looking for ways for their children to navigate through our educational system.

13) Writing

Companies are always in need of quality content and it is proven that the written word is a great way to get your organizations message out. If you have writing as one of your talents, you can put that talent to work freelancing for companies. Anything from DIY to real estate, top grossing companies are always looking for quality written content. It is not uncommon for a little time every day dedicated to writing, to eclipse what you make at your 9-5 gig.

14) Bartending/Serving

This is the classic side hustle and with good reason. You can make some killer money for just a few hours of your time every week. I myself used bartending to get me out of a mountain of debt and into the positive. If you have good people skills and don’t mind high-pressure environments, serving and bartending might be right for you. I even know of some people with well-established careers that still do this on weekends because the money is just too good.

15) Cleaning

Again, not something I would want to do, but if you don’t mind a little mess, then cleaning is right up your alley. Some people just don’t have time to keep their place up to snuff, so hiring someone to come in once a week becomes necessary. Even dedicating a small number of hours every week to this side hustle can land you an extra $500 a month or more. That’s great cash for a little vacuuming and dusting. Make sure you add a surcharge if toilets are part of the gig, trust me.

Side hustles are becoming the norm, not the exception, for those wanting to get ahead in life. With companies freezing wages it becomes necessary to find ways to make extra money. Adding a side hustle to your life may allow you to save for a rainy day, take the annual vacation you always wanted, or even get out of crippling debt. Another good part of working more is that it means you have less time to spend your money. That’s sort of like a double positive. Either way, more money is the name of the game, so find your side hustle and rock it all the way to the bank.
